Is Identity Guard worth it?

Identity Guard offers identity theft protection at a competitive price, but is it worth it? We’ll explain Identity Guard’s main features, break down its pros and cons, and explore what real users think, so you can decide if it’s a good fit for your needs or if another service is a better choice.

A person viewing the Identity Guard website on their computer.

Identity Guard, owned by the digital security company Aura, offers a range of identity theft protection and credit monitoring features. The company’s stated mission is to “empower every person to take control of their personal information to protect it from fraud, theft or misrepresentation.” But is Identity Guard worth it?

To answer this question, we researched Identity Guard’s product to learn about the service’s features, including its strengths, weaknesses, and reputation — read more about our methodology here. Then we compiled our findings into this comparison so you can explore for yourself how Identity Guard compares to other services available.

We’ll begin with what real users and experts say.

Aura data breach exposes 900K records

What happened: Identity Guard’s parent company Aura suffered a data breach in March that exposed 900,000 customer records — primarily names and email addresses, along with some home and phone contact details. Aura confirmed the breach, stating that the incident stemmed from a phishing attack targeting an employee.

Why it matters: When criminals get contact info from a breach, they can launch targeted phishing and social engineering attacks — emails, texts, and calls that look and sound legitimate.

Identity Guard reviews: What users and experts say

With a Trustpilot score of 3.9 out of 5 stars as of March 2026, Identity Guard receives mixed user reviews. Some satisfied customers note the company’s friendly service and quick response times. Others who rated the service 1-star, however, report issues like unexpected and expensive auto-renewals, inaccurate or inconsistent alerts, and functionality issues with the mobile app.

Here’s a more detailed look at how user reviews stack up for Identity Guard compared to LifeLock.

The mixed sentiment about Identity Guard’s value is echoed in some expert reviews, too, with a review for Tom’s Guide giving the service a rating of just 3.5 stars.

In his summary, reviewer Brian Nadel commends the variety of plans and cheap pricing, but notes several drawbacks, including that “the entry-level subscriptions don’t include credit monitoring for early detection of fraud” and “the best they do is annual delivery of credit reports.”

Advantages of Identity Guard

Identity Guard offers most of the industry-standard features you’d expect from an identity theft protection service, like dark web monitoring, financial transaction alerts, and up to $1 million in identity theft insurance.

With three tiers available, it provides flexible options to fit different protection needs and budgets, including one of the cheapest plans on the market in the form of its $7.50 monthly “Value” plan. Reviewers also tend to note the generally friendly customer service.

Drawbacks of Identity Guard

While Identity Guard offers a very affordable lower tier, it lacks several key features that other providers offer. Most notably, the entry-level plan doesn’t include credit monitoring, a feature that alerts you to changes to your credit file, which is standard with other options like LifeLock and often considered critical for identity theft protection.

This cheap plan is also missing some valuable features like automatic data broker removal, USPS address change alerts, and stolen wallet protection, falling short of offering anything above basic identity monitoring and insurance.

And, unlike some other options on the market, Identity Guard doesn’t offer a free trial, so there’s no easy way to test it before buying a paid plan.

Identity Guard main features

Identity Guard’s basic offering includes a range of tools for personal data and identity theft protection, like data breach notifications, dark web monitoring, up to $1 million in identity theft insurance, and support from a U.S.-based customer care team. Pricier tiers add credit monitoring, social media monitoring, and alerts for suspicious bank account, credit card, or investment account activity.

Here’s a closer look at Identity Guard’s main features:

  • Identity monitoring: The platform monitors personal information, like your name, Social Security number (SSN), and driver’s license number, and alerts you to suspicious activity that might signal fraud.
  • Identity theft insurance: All plans include up to $1 million in coverage for losses, fees, and other related expenses if your identity is stolen as a member.
  • Identity restoration: A customer service hotline based in the U.S. is available to guide you through identity recovery and assist with fraud resolution if you become a victim.
  • Dark web monitoring: This feature scans the surface and hidden parts of the internet, alerting you if it finds that your data appears in breaches or on dark web marketplaces.
  • Password manager: Identity Guard’s password manager encrypts and stores your login credentials and credit card info for one-click access, although it doesn’t offer as many features as a dedicated password manager.
  • Credit monitoring: Premier product tiers offer three‑bureau monitoring, allowing you to keep tabs on your credit reports and get alerts of new inquiries, accounts, or changes.
  • Additional monitoring: Identity Guard’s most expensive tier offers a range of additional monitoring features, including alerts for suspicious bank account, credit card, investment account, and social media activity.

Identity Guard plan breakdown

Identity Guard offers three plan tiers, with each one available for individuals or families. Every plan offers a different level of protection, with some valuable features, like credit monitoring, unavailable on the most basic tier.

Value

The Value Plan is Identity Guard’s entry-level offering. It includes core features like dark web monitoring, data breach alerts, high-risk transaction monitoring, a password manager, and $1 million in identity theft insurance.

However, it lacks credit monitoring features, broadly considered one of the foundations of identity theft protection. It also doesn’t offer the broader monitoring and alert features, credit score tracking, or the “white glove” fraud resolution services that are available in the premium plan.

This plan is designed for budget-conscious users who want basic identity theft protection, but it may offer less insight into potential threats like credit fraud or financial scams due to its limited monitoring capabilities.

Total

The Total plan is Identity Guard’s mid-tier option, offering everything in the Value plan plus credit monitoring, monthly credit score updates, and bank account monitoring. However, it doesn’t include credit reports, credit lock features, or advanced monitoring covering social media, investment accounts, credit cards, or home titles.

This plan is built for users seeking more comprehensive protection than the Value plan, but who are hesitant to pay the high price of Ultra. The addition of credit monitoring makes it a more compelling option, but it lacks some financial account monitoring features available with other services, like investment account alerts.

Ultra

The Ultra plan is Identity Guard’s most comprehensive option. It includes everything from the Total plan plus additional monitoring features that provide coverage of credit cards, 401(k) and investment accounts, home titles, social media accounts, USPS address changes, and criminal registries. It also includes credit lock functionality and annual three-bureau credit reports.

This plan is best for individuals or families with financial assets, like investments, property, or high-limit credit cards, who want more comprehensive protection and recovery support.

However, the higher cost puts it in the same category as options like LifeLock Total, which offers up to $3 million in identity theft reimbursement coverage,3 an automatic data broker removal tool, scam support features including up to $10,000 in dedicated scam reimbursement, and greater access to credit reports.††

Are there better identity theft services?

Alternative identity theft services may be a better fit for some users. Identity Guard’s middle- and upper-tier plans offer many of the features you’d expect from an identity theft protection service. But other options on the market, like LifeLock, offer credit monitoring as standard, higher reimbursement limits, and valuable additional features like stolen wallet protection, scam support, and automatic data broker removal.

Some alternatives also have better average user ratings on platforms like Trustpilot, and often appear higher in expert roundups of the best identity theft protection services, like those published by PC Mag, Tom’s Guide, and Forbes.

Is Identity Guard better than LifeLock?

No, Identity Guard is not better than LifeLock — which one is best for you depends on what your priorities are.

At the entry-level tier, Identity Guard’s Value plan might be worth considering if you’re on a strict budget and don’t mind missing out on credit monitoring. But LifeLock Core, available for just a few extra dollars per month, offers more features, including two-bureau credit monitoring, financial account alerts, an automatic data broker removal tool, and stolen wallet protection.

And, at the premium tier, LifeLock Total has a higher total reimbursement limit than Identity Guard Ultra, with up to $3 million in identity theft reimbursement and up to $10,000 in reimbursement coverage for scam-related losses.

Plus, with a Trustpilot score of 4.9 out of 5 stars, LifeLock has a better customer review average than Identity Guard, which has a rating of 3.8 out of 5 stars.

Some experts echo users’ feelings about LifeLock, too, with a Tom’s Guide review of the best identity theft protection services naming it “Best for features” and saying:

“LifeLock is the perfect choice for those looking for the most comprehensive identity theft protection with a wide variety of plans and subscriptions to choose from.” - Tom’s Guide

Get reliable identity protection

An identity theft protection service isn’t necessarily a good place to make a compromise, and your chosen service should offer everything you need.

If you’re looking for a service that offers three-bureau credit monitoring, financial account alerts, stolen wallet protection, up to $3 million in identity theft reimbursement, dedicated scam reimbursement coverage, and features like automatic data broker removal, choose LifeLock.

Methodology

To create this article, we evaluated Identity Guard using publicly available, independently verifiable information. We also reviewed documentation on monitoring features, credit tools, financial protections, reimbursement terms, pricing, usability, and customer support.

We supplemented this with analysis from independent publishers such as PCMag and Tom’s Guide, as well as customer feedback and aggregate ratings from platforms including Trustpilot, Apple’s App Store, and Google Play.

By relying on public resources, we aim to provide readers with a review they can trust. All information was checked and reviewed before publication and is subject to change. The analysis reflects the author’s independent evaluation and does not necessarily represent the views of LifeLock or its parent company.
